CATL’s 5GWh Alfen Deal Signals the End of the LFP Monopoly

System integrator Alfen and battery company CATL have struck a 5GWh partnership for sodium-ion BESS deployments in Europe.

While the industry has been hyper-focused on the LFP price floor, Alfen just placed a massive 5GWh bet that the future isn't lithium-only. This isn't a "memorandum of understanding" or a pilot project; 5GWh is enough to power roughly 100,000 mid-sized C&I storage systems. For the European installer, this is the first definitive signal that sodium-ion (Na-ion) has moved from the "someday" category to a line item in your 2025 procurement strategy.

The Cold Hard Logic of Salt

Why pivot when LFP prices are currently at record lows? Because CATL knows the lithium cycle is a roller coaster, and Alfen needs a hedge. But for the field engineer, the real win is thermal performance. Sodium-ion doesn't turn into a brick at -20°C.
