For years, AC-coupling has been the 'easy button' for storage retrofits because you don't have to mess with the existing inverter strings. But as we move into a high-curtailment environment in markets like Spain and Poland, 'easy' is becoming expensive.
The 3% Margin That Actually Matters
In a standard AC-coupled system, your electrons go through three conversion stages: DC to AC, AC back to DC into the battery, then AC again for discharge. You’re bleeding roughly 8-12% in round-trip efficiency (RTE). By going DC-coupled—connecting the battery directly to the DC bus of the solar array—you skip a conversion step. The Engineering Trade-off

You’re moving away from the 'Lego-block' simplicity of standalone AC blocks from the likes of Tesla or Sungrow and moving toward tighter, manufacturer-specific integration. You need a unified Power Plant Controller (PPC) that manages both the strings and the storage as a single asset. We’ve seen projects in the Alentejo region struggle during commissioning because the BESS and the PV inverters start fighting over voltage control due to poorly optimized firmware.
