By laying modules flat on the dirt, you theoretically slash structural costs by 70% and double your Ground Coverage Ratio (GCR). In land-constrained markets like the Netherlands or for space-restricted C&I projects in the Ruhr valley, that density looks like a cheat code. But as any O&M lead who has spent a summer in Alentejo will tell you: physics always collects its debt.
Thermal Suicide and the Soiling Tax
PV modules are not floor tiles. By removing the air gap, you lose the convective cooling essential for maintaining efficiency. A standard Tier 1 monocrystalline module has a temperature coefficient of Pmax around -0.35%/°C. In the California desert—or a Spanish summer—those modules resting on the thermal mass of the earth will cook.
